Newcastle sign Mikel Merino outright

Premier League outfit Newcastle United have announced on their official website that Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino has signed a permanent deal with the club.

The 21-year-old initially joined the Magpies on loan with option to buy, but the club officials decided to trigger the clause after just seven appearances.

Merino in turn signed a deal until June 2022, and he will now be able to solely focus on his performances without worrying about the future.

“I’m really happy to be here, and for this part of the contract to finally be official. I’m happy to be here for five more years and I hope to keep playing for this club and to give good things to all the people and the club,” he told NUFC TV.

“I have been focussed on football always, but it’s good to know it’s now official and people will know it. I’m focussed on my displays and improving myself, and I’m really happy to have signed this contract.”

The Spain Under-21 international had joined Borussia Dortmund in June 2016 as one of country’s hottest prospects, but he only managed 8 league outings for the Millionaires.

Merino then managed to kick-start his career at St James’ Park, starting 6 Premier League games and coming on as a substitute once.
