Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino praised West Brom striker Romelu Lukaku after he tore his team apart on Saturday.

The 19-year-old, who is loan from Chelsea, was the star man for West Brom as they thrashed Southampton 3-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The Belgium international scored his side’s second goal, and created the other two, and Pochettino admitted his side had no answer for Lukaku.

“We were just not able to counter that or face that, so we were in trouble from the start. Today we suffered a lot with long balls. From the beginning we were not comfortable with them at all.

“We had a lot of problems with Lukaku and their [other] attacking players. We were unable to establish ourselves in the game at the start.

“When we conceded the first goal the situation became even worse. We were not able to establish ourselves.”

West Brom’s easy win was helped by the fact that Southampton had Gaston Ramirez and Danny Fox sent off during the match.

The visitors also had Marc Antoine-Fortune sent off, and Pochettino refused to comment on the incidents.

“I don’t know [whether the decisions were correct],” he continued.

“I prefer to look at the referee’s decisions on the TV in a review because from my point of view on the pitch I wasn’t able to see exactly what happened. I will watch the review then make my decision.”
