Polonia Warszawa kicked off their Polish Ekstraklasa season with an away trip to Lechia Gdansk’s PGE Arena on Monday.

After four minutes, it looked as though luck was in the visitors’ favour as Daniel Golebiewski sprung the offside trap to put the visitors ahead.

But seven minutes later, Lechia, who finished 13th in the league last season, hit back, with Piotr Wisniewski’s free-kick squeezing in at the near post.

With just over 17 minutes played, the game had its third goal – Lechia failed to clear a corner and Pawel Wszolek bundled the ball in from a yard out to make it 2-1 in Polonia’s favour.

The hosts continued to press, but they were made to pay in the closing exchanges, when Polonia broke on the counter-attack from a Lechia free kick.

Jacek Kielb finished off the rapid break with a goal in the 90th minute to ensure an opening day win for the away team.

Next up for last season’s sixth-placed side is a home fixture against Lech Poznan on Saturday.
