Javier Saviola has admitted that he expects Benfica to beat Everton on Thursday.
The Portuguese giants go head-to-head with their Premier League counterparts on Thursday in the latest round of Europa League fixtures.
The Toffees currently top Group I, having taken maximum points from their opening two games, but are facing a potentially damaging selection crisis ahead of their trip to Estadio da Luz.
That could play into Benfica’s hands, with Argentine striker Saviola of the opinion that Jorge Jesus’ side should be regarded as favourites to prevail on home soil.
“The match against Everton will be difficult but Benfica have been very strong at Da Luz and we are obliged to win,” he told skysports.com.
“Everton are a strong side in the Premier League but I think they have been a bit inconsistent this season. Benfica, meanwhile, are having a positive campaign and with the support of our fans I am sure we can take three points.
He added: “Over the summer we played some friendlies against English clubs and we achieved some favourable results. That is a good sign.
“In any European contest it is difficult to say who will come out on top, but we will be fully focused on getting the three points.
“It is an important match, not decisive, but any errors at home could be costly at this stage of the competition.”
Saviola moved to Benfica from Real Madrid over the summer, having struggled to make an impact at the Bernabeu.
He hopes his new surroundings will provide him with the ideal platform on which to display his undoubted ability, with the 2010 World Cup finals beginning to weigh on his mind.
“I am happy in Benfica and with the minutes I am getting on the field,” he said.
“The coach has confidence in me and I dream of success and winning titles at this club.
“The Argentina national team? I know that (Diego) Maradona and his staff have watched many Benfica games. Perhaps I could make the World Cup if I continue to play well.”
