Having drawn 3-3 with Bochum on the opening weekend of the season, ‘Gladbach raced into a 2-0 lead at home to Hertha when Brouwers headed his side ahead with their first real chance of the game after 23 minutes.

They extended their lead when Borussia’s Germany striker Oliver Neuville set up Matmour who drilled home his shot from close range on 52 minutes, but Hertha’s Serbian midfielder Gojko Kacar hit a late consolation goal for Berlin.
