´Football is a crazy thing´, says Gomez

Mario Gomez said Bayern Munich were deserved winners following their 2-1 victory away to his former team Stuttgart on Sunday.

Visitors Bayern came from behind to win 2-1 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, with Gomez netting both goals at his old stomping ground.

Stuttgart played with 10 men for 60 minutes of the match following the 29th-minute dismissal of Christian Molinaro.

Despite their man advantage, Gomez felt Bayern endured a nervy finish, with striker Cacau going close to netting an equaliser for the hosts late on.

“Sometimes football is a crazy thing,” Gomez said.

“One of their players had been sent off. The game was under our control.”

“And then we were too hectic (careless) and it became a very close match. We were lucky because Cacau didn’t score. But at the end of the day I think we deserved to win.”

Prior to the match, Bayern were keen to record all three points as they look to secure top spot in the Bundesliga going into the mid-season break.

And with second-placed Borussia Dortmund drawing at home to Kaiserslautern, Bayern now lead the defending champions by three points.

“Before the game we said that we had to win,” winger Arjen Robben said.

“We knew it was going to be difficult playing in Stuttgart. But this was important because we want to remain at the top of the table. That’s why we are very happy.”
