5th August: Saturday’s Football Accumulator – 6/1

With England’s professional leagues making their return this weekend, we certainly have a heavyweight schedule on the cards. So, for those of you looking to stick on a Saturday acca, we have found a trio of tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.

Saturday, August 5th

BST 15:00 Bristol City vs Preston

Although Bristol City might have been disappointed last season as they missed out on a top-half finish, Saturday’s hosts certainly enjoyed what was a stunning summer romp. Along with signing off their pre-season preparations with a gritty 1-0 victory away at Portsmouth, Nigel Pearson’s men should find the mood in their camp at a real high heading into this weekend’s Championship opener. In fact, on a summer purple patch that is highlighted by a remarkable 8-0 romp against Newport last month, the one-time Watford boss saw his free-scoring squad notch a staggering 25 strikes in their six friendly appearances. Smelling the chance to open the new Championship campaign with an early statement, the Robins should be excited by an eye-catching record against Saturday’s guests. In fact, along with securing back-to-back 2-1 wins against Preston last season, Pearson’s side are unbeaten in each of their previous five meetings. On the flip side, while Bristol City might have enjoyed a stellar pre-season romp, the Lilywhites failed to pick up any kind of summer stability. Signing off their downbeat preparations with a shock 2-0 loss at the hands of National League outfit Stockport, Ryan Lowe’s men recorded just a single win from any of their final five friendly showdowns. Likewise, gaining a reputation for their struggles away from Deepdale last season, we are backing a home victory on Saturday afternoon.

Tip: Bristol City win & Under 4.5 goals @ 13/10

15:00 Derby vs Wigan

Suffering heartbreak last season and coming under a fair amount of scrutiny as they missed out on the chance to clinch a play-off ticket, Derby will know that they have plenty of pressure on their shoulders this time around. However, once again tipped as a standout contender to book a crucial Championship return this time around, the Rams will know the importance of flying out the traps this month. Losing just one of their five friendly appearances this summer and with that run highlighted by a 3-0 romp against Stoke, Paul Warne’s men certainly impressed with their success at Pride Park last season. It should be noted, Derby lost just a pair of their final 10 League One showdowns in front of their own supporters. Likewise, unbeaten in each of their previous seven straight meetings against Wigan across all competitions – a run that stems all the way back to 2014 – Warne’s side should be confident of making an early statement here. Watching the Latics lose their Championship status last season amidst a string of issues behind the scenes, Shaun Maloney’s men could face a tricky third-tier return this time around. Mustering just two wins from their final seven Championship battles last season, Wigan also showed a host of issues on the road. Recording just a single away victory since the start of October, we are expecting a home win this weekend.

Tip: Derby win @ 7/10

15:00 Wrexham vs MK Dons

Embarking on what has been a famous fairytale story since their blockbuster Hollywood takeover was confirmed back in February 2021, Wrexham are riding what has been a stunning wave of momentum. Breaking a string of National League records last season as they breezed their way to a fourth-tier return, Saturday’s hosts now have their sights set on mounting another genuine promotion charge this time around. Heading off for a pre-season tour of the United States and with that summer adventure underlined by a 3-1 victory against Manchester United’s youngsters, Phil Parkinson’s men certainly find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Relishing a return to the Racecourse Ground this weekend, the former Sunderland boss has seen his squad gain a reputation for their free-scoring performances in the final third. Although Wrexham might be without attacking talisman Paul Mullin on Saturday afternoon, Parkinson’s side will be looking to cash in on an MK Dons squad who are enduring an extended crisis. Losing their League One status last season and dealing with a string of issues behind the scenes, the Buckinghamshire-based outfit have also failed to find any kind of stability over the summer. In fact, continuing on from last season, the Dons have remarkably failed to claim a single win from any of their previous 14 straight appearances across all formats.

Tip: Wrexham win & Over 1.5 goals @ 1/1
