A Stamford Bridge Clear Out: The Chelsea superstars who could be heading for the exit this summer

Putting in another toothless display last weekend as they slumped to a 2-0 loss away at Tottenham, Chelsea find themselves in the midst of what has become a public Premier League nightmare.

Opening their Champions League knockout stage adventure with a 1-0 loss away at Borussia Dortmund on February 15th, it is no secret that Graham Potter finds a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders.

Knowing that they are in need of a minor miracle if they’re to claim a crucial top-four finish this season, Chelsea are facing the real threat that they could miss out on Europe football entirely come May.

Failing to find any kind of stability since appointing the ex-Brighton boss back in September, the fading Premier League giants have recorded just a pair of top-flight victories since way back on October 16th.

While the Stamford Bridge hierarchy might have once again broken the bank during the January transfer window as they extended on their remarkable flurry under Todd Bohley, it is no secret that Chelsea are planning a major clear out this summer.

Ahead of what looks set to be a crucial few months behind the scenes in west London, we have taken a look at a few Chelsea superstars who have been linked with a move away in 2023.

Raheem Sterling

While Raheem Sterling might have only made the move to west London last summer after ending his seven-year stay at Manchester City, the England ace has already found himself linked with an almost immediate move away from Stamford Bridge.

Although the four-time Premier League winner might have been seen to be a key part in Chelsea’s bid to clinch another top-four finish this season, Sterling has struggled with injury issues and has failed to produce a regular run under Potter.

Making just a pair of Premier League starts since the Blues picked up a 2-0 victory against Bournemouth on New Year’s Day, the one-time Liverpool starlet has also notched just four top-flight strikes in his 18 appearances.

With it now looking like Chelsea need to slash their bumper wage bill this summer, it has been suggested over recent weeks that the 28-year-old could already be sacrificed by Potter when the window reopens.

Despite putting pen to paper on a five-year-deal at Stamford Bridge last summer, 90min reported on Monday that Arsenal would be keen on striking a potential deal should Chelsea look to cash in on the England international.

Mason Mount

While there might be continued speculation that Sterling could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge this summer, it appears that Mason Mount is also inching towards the west London exit in 2023.

Although Chelsea’s homegrown superstar might have become a fan favourite after coming through the Blues’ youth team ranks, Mount is yet to agree on a contract extension and it looks like his long-term future is at a real crossroads.

With it looking like both parties are some way off agreeing a bumper new deal at Stamford Bridge, it has been suggested that some around west London have accepted that Mount will be on the move this summer.

Falling down Potter’s pecking order now starting in just one of Chelsea’s last four appearances across all competitions, the 24-year-old is soon to enter the final 12 months of his current deal.

Despite mustering just a trio of Premier League goals from his 23 appearances this season, The Metro are reporting that both Manchester United and Liverpool are keeping tabs on proceedings over what could be a heavyweight swoop.

Christian Pulisic

Although Christian Pulsic might have impressed many as the USA reached the knockout stage of last winter’s Qatar World Cup, the 24-year-old is enduring yet another nightmare spell at Stamford Bridge.

Picking up a long-term knee injury as Chelsea suffered a 1-0 loss at home against Manchester City on January 1st, he is soon to enter the final 12 months of his current deal in SW6 and Potter’s side are now keen to cut their losses on a player who has notched just one top-flight goal this season.

While Pulisic might have shown glimpses of what he is capable of since arriving from Borussia Dortmund back in 2019, the 24-year-old has endured a long list of injury issues.

However, despite notching just 20 Premier League strikes since making his English switch four years ago, it appears that the USA’s poster boy won’t be short of options when the window reopens this summer.

Despite previously being linked with the likes of Manchester United over the past 12 months, Spanish outlet Marca reported on Monday that Real Madrid are eyeing a shock swoop.
