Ajax have completed the signing of Netherlands international Owen Wijndal from AZ for a fee of €10million.

The former AZ skipper has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the reigning Eredivisie champions.

Wijndal becomes Alfred Schreuder’s second signing since taking over from Erik ten Hag, following the arrival of Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham last week.

Although just 22 years of age, the left-back brings plenty of experience to the Ajax defence having already earned 11 caps for the Netherlands since making his debut against Mexico in October 2020.

Wijndal subsequently ends his 12-year association with AZ, whose academy he joined at the age of 10.

After making his professional debut as a 17-year-old during the 2016-17 season, the defender played 143 times for the club across all competitions, scoring four goals while assisting a further 27.

He also represented the Kaaskoppen in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League, and was named captain ahead of the 2021-22 campaign following Teun Koopmeiners’ departure for Atalanta.
