AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri believes his side’s Serie A encounter against Roma could be a defining moment in the race for the title.

Reigning champions Milan are fifth on the Serie A table, having won three matches in succession heading into the match at the Olimpico on Saturday.

Allegri feels a win in Rome will be sound proof of his side’s Scudetto credentials.

“What awaits us at the Olimpico is a direct clash which is worth the Scudetto,” Allegri said.

“If we get points against Roma it will allow us to stay towed to those at the top of the table. So, this game is a very important one for us.”

But Allegri knows ninth-placed Roma will be similarly eager for three points, especially after losing 2-1 to Genoa on Wednesday.

“Roma played an excellent game against Genoa and they did not deserve to lose,” Allegri said.

“We will need to be careful and play an excellent game on every level.”

“We want to bring home a positive result and get the three points as well as continue on the path we have taken in our last three games.”

Milan defender Philippe Mexes is likely to miss the match against his former club after suffering an injury in training.
