New West Brom signing Nicolas Anelka wants to help the club qualify for Europe next season.

The 34-year-old moved to the Hawthorns on a one-year deal on Thursday and believes he can help his new team-mates improve on their eighth-placed Premier League finish last term

“I hope we will be successful this year and hopefully we will reach Europe,” the former Real Madrid and Arsenal striker told the club’s official website after completing his move.

“We will try to do better than last season. That’s why I’m here.

“When I spoke with the head coach (Steve Clarke) he said he wants to do better than last year. We will try our best to do that.

“We will also try to do the same in the cup competitions.”

West Brom will be the 11th club that Anelka has played for in a career that has seen him ply his trade in destinations including France, Spain, China and Turkey. Most recently, he spent time on loan with Italian side Juventus at the end of last term.

However, the striker confirmed that he is likely to finish his playing days in England.

“I think I will finish in England, I’m happy here,” he continued.

“I also hope that it will be with this club. I think this is the right club for me.

“I’m 34 years old now and I want to enjoy my football. I hope everything will be perfect.”
