What is Asian Handicap?

An Asian Handicap is a betting term that depicts spread betting, which is a type of wagering where the betting is done on the outcome of an event and the pay-out is based on the level of accurateness of the bet, rather than a fixed- odds wagering which is a kind of betting against odds set by a bookie, The term Asian Handicap is only called Asian due to its Eastern origin and spread betting has become increasingly popular in the field of soccer betting over the years.

Handicaps are usually given to the under dog team, this is the team more likely to lose.

How Asian Handicap Differs From Traditional Betting Odds

Football, or soccer as it is also called, is one of the few sports in the world where a draw is a moderately frequent result. With conventional fixed odds, ties are treated as an additional outcome to the game. In other words, if you bet on a team to win and the game comes to draw, you lose. With Asian Handicaps, however, there will be no draws or tie games as they are forced to produce a winner and in doing so each team has a 50 percent chance of winning and so do you as a bettor.





Asian Handicap Betting During Games

In essence the underdog will start the game with a fraction of a point, let’s say for example, Manchester United was playing against a team that is not so well skilled or well known, and lets say that team was given a handicap of .5 goal. The starting score for the match would be Man U= zero and Underdog team =.5 Now if Man U scores 2 goals for the entire game and the underdog team also happens to score two goals, that would have normally been a tie or draw, but seeing as the under dog team had already started with .5 score, their final score would be 2.5 while Man U is still at 2. The underdog team would have won that match. Therefore, a push will be impossible as there is no way any team can score a fraction of a goal to make the score even again, someone would have to win, however the handicap is not a set fraction.

The Asian handicap betting system works in a straight-forward approach wherein the bookies’ aim is to generate a handicap that will make the possibility of whichever team winning (with the handicap considered) as close to 50 percent as possible. Seeing that the odds are now a 50-50 possibility, bookies offer payoffs close to an even odd proposition. Asian Handicaps start at a quarter goal and can go up to 2.5 or even 3 goals in a football game with a great inequality in their abilities. What this means is that the underdog team will get its handicap depending on how it is rated against the other team, the less skills they have the bigger the handicap that will be given to them so as to make the chance of them winning even. Taken in conjunction with the posted total for the game, the handicap essentially predicts the game’s final score.
