Franco Baldini has left his role as Roma’s director of football by mutual consent, the club announced on Wednesday.
The 52-year-old joined the Serie A side in 2011, after bringing a four-year spell as Fabio Capello’s assistant with the England national team to an end.
But Baldini and fellow directors Walter Sabatini and Mauro Baldissoni received intense criticism in the wake of Roma’s 1-0 Coppa Italia defeat to local rivals Lazio in May.
And the Italian has now elected to depart after just 18 months in the job.
“I want to thank AS Roma’s ownership for the opportunity to work together. I have enjoyed my time in Rome and wish the best to the club, the players and fans,” he told the club’s official website.
While the club’s president, James Pallotta, added: “We thank Franco Baldini for his service to AS Roma over the past two seasons. He played an important role in the launch of our project. We wish him well in his future endeavours.”
Baldini has been linked with taking a director of football role at Premier League side Tottenham.
The club’s manager, Andre Villas-Boas, recently voiced his desire for such an appointment to be made, saying: “I think of a more European style of structure, of a head coach and then the functions of a manager will be handed up to a different person.”
