Baup credits German efficiency

Marseille coach Elie Baup has hailed Borussia Moenchengladbach’s efficiency in attack after the teams played out a 2-2 draw on Thursday.

Moenchengladbach took the lead at the Stade Velodrome, but goals from Joey Barton and Jordan Ayew looked to have Marseille on track for a win that would have left them second in Europea League Group C with two matches to play.

A 93rd-minute strike from Juan Arango was enough to save a point for the Germans, however, and Baup said it was not a nice feeling to be on the receiving end of a last-gasp strike.

“I remember against Fenerbahce we scored at the end, this time we have conceded a late goal. We know how it feels now,” Baup said.

“There were one or two alerts before, and in these kind of finishes, you must stay focused, and have a strong defensive discipline.

“Against this team, in the two games, we have conceded four goals but we always had the ball, we tried to play. Our possession was higher but we knew them, they play very well on the counter-attack.

“They go very fast on the counter, they were a constant threat to us. We knew that from the first leg and if you look at the two games, nothing has changed.

“The possession was for us but they were very efficient.”
