Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says Bastian Schweinsteiger’s shoulder injury is a bitter blow for his side.

Schweinsteiger broke his collarbone in Bayern’s 3-2 Champions League Group A win over Napoli at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old will be out of action of six weeks with the injury, and although Rummenigge said he was thrilled to beat Napoli, he was disappointed to lose Schweinsteiger.

“I think we have seen a very good game,” Rummenigge said.

“We won and we took a big step towards the next round.”

“Obviously the injury of Bastian hurts. He probably won’t be able to play again this year. He will be out for six weeks. That’s hard but we have to deal with it.”

Bayern defender Philipp Lahm echoed the sentiments of his CEO and said all the players had been shocked by the severity of the injury.

“For us it’s sad that Basti is injured for a long time,” Lahm said.

“You saw it in the game after he got injured – the team was shocked. It looked bad and we hope that he will be back on the pitch soon.”

And midfielder Thomas Mueller said the team would miss Schweinsteiger’s drive in the middle of the park.

“It’s very negative for us. I don’t know the diagnosis exactly. It seems that he won’t play for us for a few games. That’s a long period.” Mueller said.

“On the game – we won and that’s the most important thing. We struggled in the second half with our own mistakes.”

“Despite the victory we hope Basti is not out for a longer term, because he is a very important player for us, as you have seen.”
