Club Brugge climbed up to second in the Belgian First Division after a 1-0 home win over Sint-Truiden on Sunday.
After Gent slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Beerschot on Saturday, Christoph Daum’s side had the chance to put the pressure on table-toppers Anderlecht.
And they gained all three points thanks to Belgian Bjorn Vleminckx who bagged his seventh goal of the season in all competitions 11 minutes after half-time.
Sint-Truiden boss Franky van der Elst made a raft of changes in the hope of finding a late equaliser but they were in vain as Club Brugge held on for their fourth successive win.
Sint-Truiden remain in the relegation zone after their 11th loss in 17 league matches this season.
