Bellamy fitness key for Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish insists Craig Bellamy will not be overworked as he looks to ensure his presence throughout the rest of the season.

The 32-year-old has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but this season has brought nine starts and 11 substitute appearances since returning to Anfield.

With the former Newcastle and Manchester City man proving so important to the Merseyside club in the absence of the suspended Luis Suarez, Dalglish emphasised the importance of ensuring Bellamy remains available for selection over the course of the season.

“Some players need greater management than others, but the players themselves have got to look after themselves,” Dalglish told Sky Sports.

“Craig is fantastic in preparing for matches. I’m sure there’s many others out there exactly the same – but he’s really got a great knowledge of how you prepare.”

“Some can go for longer, further, harder than others. We just want them to give themselves the best possible opportunity of performing as best they can.”

“We can’t run people into the ground, so we have to try and manage how they get on the pitch and how long they are on it.”

“For the fitness side of it it’s not fair on too many players at this stage of the season to be starting them every single game.”

“Our goalkeeper, Pepe Reina, obviously, has started every one – but for the outfield players, it’s difficult to get them through every game you play.”

Liverpool next match in the English Premier League is a trip to Bolton on Saturday.
