Berlusconi backs Pato

AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi has defended out-of-sorts striker Alexandre Pato, and played down links with Robin van Persie.

Brazil forward Pato started Milan’s 1-1 draw with Juventus on Saturday but was replaced at half-time after failing to impress during the opening 45 minutes.

It was a first Serie A appearance in over a month for Pato, who has struggled for fitness and form this season, but Berlusconi gave his backing to the 22-year-old.

“I think he is the right player for Milan and I hope that Milan are the right club for Pato,” Berlusconi was quoted as saying by La Stampa.

Berlusconi, 75, reiterated his belief that Milan were denied victory by the assistant referee’s failure to award a goal to Sulley Muntari, who had a second-half effort incorrectly ruled out.

“Milan were entitled to a positive result,” he said.

“Despite our many injuries, despite 14 players in the infirmary, we performed well.”

“Then we had the goal disallowed which was an absolutely clear goal, as you can see in TV replays or that much-reported photo.”

Questioned about Milan’s reported interest in Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, who has put contract talks with his club on hold until the end of the season, the Milan owner gave little away.

“He (Van Persie) is a good player, but there are many more good players out there,” he said.

Milan remain top of Serie A, one point clear of Juventus, who have a game in hand over the reigning champions.
