Competition: Ligue 1

Market: Lille win

Odds: 5/6 @ 888sport

Looking to mark their Ligue 1 return with a statement on the road, Lille will make the trip to Clermont on Wednesday evening.

Starting with the hosts, while Clermont might have impressed many across France when opening the 2022/23 campaign, Les Lanciers had largely failed to keep up that same momentum before heading into the festive break. Last seen on Ligue 1 duties getting hit with a 2-1 loss away at Lens on November 12th, Pascal Gastien’s men have come tumbling down the top-flight table. Along with failing to find any stability during their winter interval, the former Niort boss has seen his side fail to win any of their last five Ligue 1 outings. With that run highlighted by a 3-1 drumming at home against Brest on October 23rd, Clermont will know that they face a tough return on Wednesday evening. Suffering a 4-0 defeat when they last faced off against Lille back in March, Gastien’s side are rightfully tipped as an underdog pick here.

As for the visitors, keeping the mood in their camp at a real high with a string of eye-catching flurries over the festive break, Lille will be desperate to lay down a real marker in midweek. With their sights firmly set on trying to mount a Champions League charge in 2023, Paulo Fonseca’s men should be smelling a chance on Wednesday evening. Last seen on top-flight duties claiming a 1-0 victory at home against Angers, the one-time Roma boss has seen his squad lose just one of their last six Ligue 1 outings. With that run highlighted by an action-packed 4-3 victory against Monaco on October 23rd, Lille will also be boosted by their rampant previous meeting against the midweek hosts. Storming their way to that 4-0 romp when they welcomed Clermont to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy back in March, we’re expecting a similar away victory here.

Bet: Lille 5/6 to beat Clermont in Wednesday’s Ligue 1 matchup @ 888sport
