Burnley clinch permanent deal for Man City defender Walker

Burnley have completed the signing of right-back Kyle Walker from Manchester City, with the England international penning a two-year contract at Turf Moor.

Walker spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at AC Milan after falling down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.

He made 11 appearances for the Rossoneri in Serie A, though they opted against making his move permanent after missing out on European qualification, finishing eighth.

Walker was not expected to be reintegrated into Pep Guardiola’s squad, and he will now attempt to help Scott Parker’s Clarets consolidate a top-flight place following their promotion.

Walker told the club’s website: “I’m delighted to be here. When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at.

“He’s done an amazing job here, guiding the club back to the Premier League with a 100-point haul, and now we’re looking forward, together, at being back in the greatest league in the world.

“Burnley had a tremendous campaign last season, built on an incredible defensive record, and I can’t wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad.”

Walker will join a defensive unit that broke several records last season.

Burnley kept 30 clean sheets in 46 Championship matches, only conceding 16 goals as they finished second behind Leeds United.

That saw them equal the all-time record for clean sheets in a single campaign in the Football League, with Port Vale also keeping 30 in the Third Division North in 1953-54.

The Clarets enjoyed a run of 12 straight clean sheets between December and March, the second-longest run in English football history, after Manchester United kept 14 in a row in the Premier League in 2008-09.

Only Chelsea have ever conceded fewer goals in an English league season, shipping just 15 in their first Premier League campaign under Jose Mourinho in 2004-05.

Walker was with City for eight years in total, having arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017 to help the club win six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four EFL Cups and their first-ever Champions League in 2022-23.

The 35-year-old captained City to their 2023-24 title win and made 319 appearances for them in total, scoring six goals.

Walker, who was named in Thomas Tuchel’s first two England squads, could make his Premier League debut for Burnley against former club Spurs, on August 16.
