Huddersfield Town climbed into the playoff places with a 3-1 win in the Championship on Wednesday.

Simon Grayson’s side travelled to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday hoping to extend their unbeaten run to five matches and did just that with a terrific win in a spiteful match that saw both sides reduced to 10 men.

Northern Irish midfielder Oliver Norwood – signed from Manchester United in the off-season – gave Huddersfield the lead after just 16 minutes.

And that was doubled two minutes later as Lee Novak got on the scoresheet to delight the away fans.

The match turned late in the first half though as Benin defender Reda Johnson pulled a goal back for Sheffield Wednesday on 37 minutes.

Huddersfield defender Joel Lynch was given a red card just a minute after the goal and all of a sudden, the hosts were back in the match.

Wednesday saw their numerical advantage last just seven minutes though as defender Joe Mattock was given a second yellow card on the stroke of half-time.

A total of 10 cards were dished out in the match, with Huddersfield midfielder Adam Clayton netting a 71st-minute penalty to seal the result.

Ipswich Town’s struggles continued as they slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Paul Jewell’s side headed into the match with a winless streak of four and their bad luck continued as an own goal from New Zealand defender Tommy Smith handed Wolves the lead with 21 minutes remaining.

Mali midfielder Tongo Doumbia came off the bench to wrap up the victory in the closing stages for the visitors.

Wednesday’s other match saw Leicester City come from behind to defeat Burnley 2-1 at the King Power Stadium.

Dean Marney fired Burnley into a 10th-minute lead but David Nugent’s equaliser, two minutes into the second half, gave Leicester all the momentum.

And they won all three points thanks to Jamie Vardy’s winner on 57 minutes.
