Chelsea lead race for Alonso

Chelsea have moved to pole position to sign Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, reports Daily Star.

The Spain international’s contract at Santiago Bernabeu is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, and it appears he will not be signing a new deal with los Blancos.

Liverpool are hoping to lure the experienced midfielder back to Anfield, but they are set to lose out on Alonso, according to Daily Star.

Recent reports have suggested that the Spaniard is not interested in a return to the Merseyside and is rather looking to sign for Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho knows the player well having coached him at Santiago Bernabeu and he is eager to get reunited with the 31-year-old in London.

Chelsea have managed to prove their title ambitions by beating Manchester City at the weekend, while they are 13/10 to defeat Arsenal in the Capital One Cup match later today.
