There has been plenty of speculation about the future of David Luiz since his heroics in Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City on Saturday. Not only did the Brazilian put in an excellent defensive performance, but he also made sure all three points stayed at Stamford Bridge in the 78th minute as he hit a looping header into the top corner to set the final score.
Luiz’s contract expires next year, and even though he’s been a regular started for the Blues since Maurizzio Sarri took over from Antonio Conte, Chelsea are well-known for not giving players over 30 fresh contracts for longer than 12 months. This policy has in the past made players look for better deals elsewhere, and both Mirror and Guardian believe that turn out the case with Luiz.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports report the centre-back is keen to stay and hasn’t dismissed the possibility of signing a 12-month extension. With both parties, and especially Sarri, apparently hopeful of a positive outcome, the negotiations may yet produce a solution acceptable for everyone involved.
