Defending champions Monterrey beat Morelia 3-1 in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

The all-Mexican clash pitted Morelia – top of the Primera Division – against the sixth-placed Monterrey.

But it was the visitors who posted the crucial victory, which was set up by a pair of first-half strikes from Humberto Suazo.

Suazo scored on 28 and 44 minutes and although Joel Huiqui got one back for Morelia on the hour mark, Abraham Carreno’s stoppage-time strike ensured Monterrey would take a two-goal lead into the second leg.

Monterrey, who had not won away from home since beating the Seattle Sounders in October, will host the second leg on March 13.
