Landon Donovan’s late goal salvaged a 2-2 draw for Los Angeles Galaxy against Toronto FC in their CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final.

After trailing by two goals early in the first half at the Rogers Centre on Wednesday, the MLS champions fought back before equalising when Donovan struck in the 88th minute to send the crowd of 47,658 home disappointed.

Toronto made a lightning start, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes.

Jamaican Ryan Johnson opened the scoring after 12 minutes and just moments later Mexican Luis Silva doubled the Canadian club’s lead.

But Mike Magee pulled a goal back for the Galaxy on 29 minutes which set up a nervy second half.

The match looked headed for a home victory before Donovan converted from a David Beckham corner kick.

The draw means the Galaxy go into the second leg, to be held in Los Angeles on March 14, as favourites.

Wednesday’s other quarter-final saw the Seattle Sounders end a three-game winless streak in the Champions League with a 2-1 defeat of Mexican side Santos Laguna.

Seattle were keen to make the most of home advantage before flying to Mexico for the second leg, and they made a bright start when David Estrada netted on 12 minutes.

Herculez Gomez levelled proceedings just after the hour mark but parity lasted just 120 seconds before Brad Evans scored the winning goal for the Americans.

The second leg will also be played on March 14.
