Paul Dummett scored an extra-time winner as 10-man Newcastle United beat Crystal Palace 3-2 to reach the fourth round of the League Cup.

Defender Dummett headed in only his second Newcastle goal in the 112th minute at Selhurst Park on Wednesday to earn the Tyneside club a victory that should lift some of the pressure on under-fire manager Alan Pardew, who was given reason to celebrate at his former club.

A double from striker Emmanuel Riviere appeared to have booked Newcastle’s progression after Dwight Gayle had earlier put Palace ahead, but a last-gasp goal from striker Sullay Kaikai on his first senior appearance for the London club forced the extra time.

Neither side were able to muster much in the additional half hour, despite Newcastle playing much of it a man down due to midfielder Mehdi Abeid’s dismissal.

And Palace paid the penalty for failing to take advantage of a depleted Newcastle side when Dummett netted to seal a fourth-round tie at holders Manchester City.

Palace – who changed their entire starting XI from Sunday’s 3-2 Premier League win at Everton – went close inside the third minute as Gayle lashed narrowly wide on the half-volley, but it was Newcastle who had the better of the early stages.

Yet Newcastle failed to create much from their dominance of possession and were punished in the 24th minute when Daryl Janmaat was adjudged to have brought down Wilfried Zaha in the area.

Referee Robert Madley duly pointed to the spot, allowing Gayle to step up and slot coolly into the bottom corner, despite Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot correctly choosing to dive to his right.

Palace’s opener did little to deter Newcastle, who would have levelled had striker Riviere been able to get a touch on Sammy Ameobi’s ball across the face of goal.

But Riviere atoned for that missed opportunity in fine style in the 36th minute as he picked up a pass from Adam Armstrong – making his full Newcastle debut as part of six changes by the visitors – before turning smartly on the edge of the box and curling the ball beyond Wayne Hennessey.

The visitors carried their momentum into the second half as Palace made a terrible start, conceding a penalty three minutes after the restart in the same place that Zaha had won the first spot-kick.

Ameobi was tripped by Paddy McCarthy and Riviere made no mistake in emphatically converting from 12 yards.

Gayle twice spurned opportunities to level before Kaikai did precisely that when he swooped in at the back post after 92 minutes and fired home at the second attempt after his initial effort was kept out by Elliot.

Newcastle’s task was made even harder in the 10th minute of extra time, Abeid given his marching orders for a second bookable offence following a foul on Zaha.

Despite Palace’s numerical advantage, Neil Warnock’s men appeared to run out of steam and Dummett capitalised on their apparent fatigue by converting a left-wing cross from Armstrong with eight minutes remaining.

Elliot then produced an outstanding point-blank save to deny Adrian Mariappa and prevent a penalty shootout as Newcastle emerged victorious from a pulsating tie.
