Dalglish: Cup win can spark more success

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish hopes his side’s Carling Cup victory will spur them towards more success this season.

Dalglish’s side lifted the Carling Cup on Sunday after a 3-2 penalty shootout win against a valiant Cardiff City at Wembley.

The score was locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 after extra-time, forcing the match to be decided on spot-kicks.

And speaking after leading the Anfield club to its first trophy since 2006, Dalglish is hopeful the feeling of winning silverware will inspire his side on to further glory.

“Although we have won something today, that is not us finished,” Dalglish said.

“We don’t want to stop here, we want to keep going. We’ve won it and we are going to really enjoy it. I know how much the players have enjoyed it and it gives you a wee flavour to come back and do it again.”

“Does actually getting your hands on a trophy inspire you? I hope so. I think anyone who has ever won a trophy, whether it’s at Wembley or wherever, has come away and said, ‘I enjoyed that, I’d love to do it again’.”

“If you do something and you enjoy it, you are going to want to do more of it, aren’t you? It’s not to say it is going to happen but you would think it was logical.”

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard echoed Dalglish’s thoughts and said it was a victory that the club need to build on.

“The important thing now is to enjoy this cup final and then we need to build on it,” Gerrard said.

“It would be stupid if we accept just this. We need more, we want more.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay was proud of his side after their battling display and said he thought they would win the game when Kenny Miller found himself in space in the penalty area in the dying stages of normal time.

“The boys are disappointed but we have a lot to be proud of,” Mackay said.

“We lost with dignity, and in the last couple of minutes of full time we had a fantastic chance, a great bit of movement, a ball into Kenny who swivelled brilliantly and I thought that was going to be it and we were going to win the cup with two minutes to go.”

“And then it just missed the top of the bar. To take one of the top teams in England and possibly Europe to penalties and to run them so close makes me very proud of that group of players in there.”
