Steven Davis believes Southampton’s pre-season schedule will leave them in good shape for the Premier League campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have won three of their five pre-season matches, with their latest game against La Liga outfit Celta Vigo on Saturday only ending in defeat on penalties following a 0-0 draw.

After a slow start to 2012-13, Southampton finished 14th in the Premier League and Davis is expecting them to push on next season.

“Pre-season is all about building your fitness and getting ready for the first game of the season, so now we’re getting that little bit closer everyone’s getting a bit more excited,” he told the club’s official website.

“We’ve got a lot to look forward to this year and hopefully we can get off to a good start at West Brom.

“I think we’ve had a good pre-season, with a lot of good work under our belts. There’s still room for improvement as always and over the next couple of weeks we’ll build it up and be ready come the West Brom game.”

Midfielder Davis made 33 appearances for Pochettino’s side last season, scoring two goals – both against Manchester City.
