New England have parted company with long-term manager Steve Nicol, after the Scot’s 10-year stint in charge of the MLS club.
After consecutive season finishes outside the playoff places, Nicol’s contract was not renewed, ending the Liverpool legend’s time in charge at the Revolution’s Gillette Stadium.
Nicol had become the title of longest-serving current coach in the MLS, but despite four MLS Cup final appearances, he will leave New England without having snared a major trophy.
Despite starting the season with four games unbeaten, Nicol’s Revolution won just one of their last 14 games to finish bottom of the Eastern Conference on 28 points from 34 matches.
The 49-year-old Nicol conceded it was time to move on.
“At the end of the day, we pretty much had great years here,” Nicol said.
“If the team is not doing well, that’s part of the game. It was a good time, a good experience, and there were certainly more good days than bad ones.”
“I have nothing but good things to say about (team owners) the Krafts. (Yesterday) wasn’t easy for them, either, but we parted on good terms and I thank them for giving me the chance to be head coach. I worked with a lot of good players and good people and it’s time to move on.”
