Nils Petersen netted a brace as Bayern Munich smashed Ingolstadt 6-0 in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday.

Germany international Thomas Mueller opened the scoring for the Bavarian heavyweights 33 minutes into the match at the Allianz Arena.

Second-tier side Ingolstadt may have been satisfied to keep the Bundesliga leaders to just one goal during the first 45 minutes of the tie.

But when Austria midfielder David Alaba added a second three minutes after the restart, the flood gates opened in the second-round match.

Striker Petersen scored twice in succession to blow the lead out to 4-0, before a Marvin Matip own-goal added further misery for the visitors.

And Takashi Usami’s last-minute strike wrapped up a comprehensive victory for Bayern.

In other matches, Mainz needed extra-time to secure a 1-0 win away to Hannover.

Following a goalless 90 minutes at the AWD-Arena, Andreas Ivanschitz struck two minutes into overtime to give visitors Mainz the lead in the all-Bundesliga clash.

And they received a last-gasp reprieve, when Hannover forward Didier Ya Konan missed a 122nd-minute penalty that would have forced a shootout.

Hertha Berlin cruised to a 3-0 win away to Rot-Weiss Essen, with Gustavo Ramos, Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Nikita Rukavytsya the men on target.

Goals from Alexander Esswein and Julian Wiessmeier helped Nurnberg get past Erzgebirge Aue 2-1.

Stuttgart led early in their match at home to Frankfurt thanks to Christoph Hemlein’s third-minute strike.

Cacau added a second on 38 minutes, and Ibrahima Traore completed the scoring with two minutes to go.

Regional fourth division club Holstein Kiel sprung a surprise, defeating Bundesliga 2. outfit Duisburg 2-0, with both goals coming in the space of three minutes early in the second half, scored by Rafael Kazior and Fiete Sykora.

Schalke left it late to overcome Karlsruhe on the road, as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Joel Matip scored in the last 10 minutes to secure a 2-0 victory for the visitors.

Finally, Kaiserslautern edged Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0, thanks to Richard Sukuta-Pasu’s goal in the last minute of extra-time.
