Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan is pleased that English midfielder David Beckham has stayed at the club.

Donovan, who spent two months on loan at Everton in the MLS off-season, is busy preparing for the new campaign as the Galaxy look to defend their title.

The American admitted he was surprised that Beckham stayed in Los Angeles and he is hopeful that the star can make a positive contribution to the team again.

“We are all very excited and maybe a little surprised that David (Beckham) stayed,” Donovan said.

“We are very excited that he wanted to stay here and be a part of this team and I think there is no question what he has meant to our team and his contribution, particularly last year, was vital and very important for us winning the championship.”

“I know we all want the same thing again and I am glad he is here to be a part of it.”

Beckham is clearly looking forward to the club’s season opener against Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

“It’s nice to open up at home against anyone but obviously Salt Lake are one of the best teams in the league,” he said.

“We are excited about the game and excited to be back at home and excited to go into this season as champions.”

In addition to the star power of Donovan and Beckham, Irish striker Robbie Keane will line-up for the Galaxy again in the new season.

Keane scored three goals for Aston Villa in a loan stint in the MLS off-season and the former Tottenham and Leeds United forward is excited about being at the club for a full season.

“I feel good, I feel sharp, I have obviously had a couple of months playing at Aston Villa which has helped me and certainly kept up my fitness,” Keane said.

“I feel sharp and I am certainly looking forward to the season. It is nice to be starting here now, in a first game with the Galaxy, right at the start of the season rather than last year when I came in with only a few months left.”
