Former Bayer Leverkusen coach Robin Dutt has joined the German Football Federation (DFB) as a technical director.

The 47-year-old had been out of a job since being sacked by Leverkusen in April after a run of poor results in the Bundesliga.

He has taken over from Matthias Sammer, who vacated the role at the beginning of the month to take up a similar position at Bayern Munich.

Dott, who signed a contract with the DFB until 2016, told reporters at a press conference: “The job and what it is about is absolutely interesting.

“To be able to take on this exciting challenge has a special significance for me. I’m looking forward to working together with Jogi Low and all DFB-coaches.

“And it is a special challenge for me to work with the country’s best talents.”

The former Freiburg coach was formally unveiled at the federation’s headquarters in Frankfurt on Wednesday with DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach, and it is believed that Germany manager Joachim Loew is happy with the appointment.

Dutt, who began his coaching career at TSG Leonberg, took charge of Freiburg for four years before joining Leverkusen in March 2011.
