Emery furious with late lapse

Valencia coach Unai Emery was left to curse his side’s concentration after they leaked two goals late in their Europa League win over PSV.

The La Liga outfit appeared to have all but sealed their place in the quarter-finals after racing into a four-goal lead after just 56 minutes of play, with Victor Ruiz and Pablo Piatti on target either side of a double from Roberto Soldado.

However, Valencia lost focus late on and paid a heavy price, with Ola Toivonen firing home from the spot on 83 minutes before Georginio Wijnaldum netted in the dying seconds to keep the tie very much alive, much to Emery’s dismay.

“We have done many positive things in the game but have had one little negative spell which has done so much damage,” the 40-year-old told AS.

“We lacked a little consistency, which has been penalised with two goals in the closing stages.”

“They are two errors which can be put down to overconfidence. We must have the same concentration throughout the game.”

“We didn’t have it in a small part of the match at the end and that has affected our good work.”

“It is something negative that we have to learn from. The game lasts 90 minutes.”

Valencia will try to protect their two-goal advantage when they travel to Eindhoven for the return leg on Thursday.
