PSV Eindhoven and Twente remain level on top of the Dutch Eredivisie standings with 37 points after both enjoyed wins on Saturday.
PSV has the edge on goal difference, having beaten Heracles 5-2 at home – though they needed three goals in the last 16 minutes to make sure of the result.
Brazilian striker Everton Ramos Da Silva handed the visitors the lead after 27 minutes, but Balazs Dzsudzsak struck back nine minutes later before PSV’s leading scorer Ola Toivonen put the hosts in front four minutes before the interval.
Da Silva scored again on the hour mark to level proceedings once more, but Heracles’ hopes were dashed 10 minutes later when defender Peter Reekers was sent off for a second yellow card.
PSV hit back in a hurry through Toivonen, with Barcelona-bound Ibrahim Afellay and Marcus Berg scoring late to notch up a 5-2 scoreline that flattered the league-leaders.
Reigning champions Twente kept up the pressure on PSV with a 2-0 home win over De Graafschap.
Midfielder Theo Janssen scored a goal in each half for Twente to move them level on points with PSV and improve their goal difference to 18 – though still well behind PSV’s 32.
And Ajax lost further ground on the leaders after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by NEC Nijmegen.
Egyptian Hossam Mido opened the scoring for Ajax after 76 minutes, but a Bram Nuytinck equaliser two minutes later meant both sides shared the points.
The draw means Ajax have won just once in their past five league games and sit in fourth spot on the standings, with 32 points.
