A hat-trick from former Birmingham and Chelsea striker Mikael Forssell was the highlight of the victory in Helsinki, as Finland gained their first points of the qualifying campaign.

Mika Vayrynen scored the only goal of the first half before Kasper Hamalainen’s 49th-minute strike opened the floodgates as Finland struck six more times in the next 30 minutes.

Forssell found the back of the net after 51 and 59 minutes and Hamalainen, Jari Litmanen and Roni Porokara all added to the tally.

Forssell’s third came in the 78th minute and sealed the rout as San Marino’s goal difference dropped to negative 21 after just four games.
