Fink sacked by Hamburg

Bundesliga side Hamburg have sacked manager Thorsten Fink after a poor start to the season.

Hamburg currently sit in 15th place in the table, with just one win from their five league matches, while they have conceded 15 goals in the process.

Fink – who has been in charge of the club for almost two years – saw his last game in charge end in a 6-2 mauling at the hands of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

And despite the fact he led the club to a seventh-place finish last season, Hamburg sporting directior Oliver Kreuzer revealed the club’s board did not feel Fink was capable of turning results around in the current campaign.

“In light of recent events and results, we have come to believe that this step is inevitable,” he said.

“We were not convinced that Thorsten Fink could achieve a turnaround with the team.”

The former Basel boss took over at Hamburg in October 2011, with the club in the relegation zone, but they achieved safety by finishing 15th.

Kreuzer added that the club were grateful for the work he had done at the Imtech Arena, saying the decision had not been “taken lightly”.

“Thorsten took over the team in an extremely difficult period two years ago and saved us from relegation,” he added.

Coaches Rodolfo Cardoso and Otto Addo will take charge ahead of the club’s clash with Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Former Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim coach Markus Babbel has already been linked with the vacant post.
