On what was a very emotional day at Anfield – the two clubs being connected by the impact of Diogo Jota – Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield 2-1 on Saturday to continue their resurrection. Having endured the worst run of form in 70 years, the reigning champions are now without a defeat in six consecutive Premier League matches (W4, D2).
It was a quick double in the first half that settled the outcome, as Ryan Gravenberch struck in the 41st minute and Florian Wirtz finally opened his Liverpool account in the 42nd.
Following his big-money transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, the German playmaker has endured plenty of criticism for lacking goal involvements for a long time – despite racking up admirable numbers in other segments of the game. He will be thrilled to have gotten off the mark.
