Fowler urges Liverpool to sell Suarez if he wants to go

Robbie Fowler says Liverpool should sell Luis Suarez if he wants to leave – but hopes the striker will stay at Anfield for years to come.

Paris Saint-Germain have been strongly linked with a summer move for Suarez, who told television channel Canal+ that he ‘could come’ to the French club and would enjoy linking up with fellow Uruguayan Diego Lugano.

Liverpool legend Fowler believes Suarez has been the Reds’ best player this season – but has told the club to sell the 25-year-old if he openly expresses his desire to leave Anfield.

“I don’t know what’s been said but I’ve been a manager,” Fowler told Goal.com. “If any player doesn’t want to be there then I think it’s better to let him go, whether it’s his choice or not.”

“It’s a tough one. He’s a fantastic player but players who come out and start saying stuff like that, maybe it’s best if he does go. If he has said it, it’s not great.”

“I don’t know if it’s the case that he has actually said it, it’s just on hearsay at the minute but I want him to remain a Liverpool player. He’s very unpredictable – he will cause any team problems. I hope that continues for a long time.”

“His form has been fantastic, he’s probably been Liverpool’s best player this season. Admittedly, he’s not scoring as many goals as he and the fans would have liked, but I don’t think you can fault his effort.”

Suarez has scored just six goals in the Premier League and the campaign has been overshadowed by the eight-game ban he received for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

Fowler, who scored 183 times in 369 appearances for Liverpool, is surprised by the striker’s lack of goals but believes the Reds number seven will start finding the net on a regular basis.

“I don’t really know (why he is not scoring),” Fowler said. “His record in Holland was phenomenal, he scored so many goals.”

“We know in the past there have been players who have scored goals in Holland but the Barclays Premier League is totally different. The players you come up against are totally different so it is harder to score goals.”

“But his overall play has been fantastic. Against any team he’s a handful and he will score goals, I’m sure of that.”

Liverpool face Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Tuesday night but enter the game in poor form having lost their past three league fixtures.

The Reds look likely to miss out on their main goal for the season of qualifying for the Champions League, but Fowler believes the club’s Carling Cup triumph shows the progress made under Kenny Dalglish.

Fowler continued: “After the Carling Cup final we wanted Liverpool to progress, get points and try and finish fourth.”

“But it’s not been great, we won the Carling Cup then the form has dipped. Fourth is looking a long, long way off now. Mathematically it’s still a possibility but it will be very, very, very tough.”

“It wouldn’t be classed as a failure to miss out on the top four. Obviously it would be a big, big disappointment but we’ve won one cup and we’re favourites to progress into the semi-final of the FA Cup.”

“Ideally, you do want to finish fourth. But if that’s not the case you want to win everything that you can, and that’s looking not too bad so far.”

“Kenny came in and he was every fan’s choice – and he has made progression. Liverpool have won a cup competition for the first time in six or seven years. The progression is definitely there. We’ve won something.”

“I’m not going to sit here and criticise every single person. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and mine is that Kenny is the manager and we stick with him until someone tells us different.”

Fowler believes Liverpool will take the three points off their city rivals on Tuesday night and says it feels ‘horrendous’ to lose a Merseyside derby.

“I’ve won a few and lost a few. There’s a pride aspect, you just don’t want to lose them. When you do lose a game like that is horrendous, you know how much it means to the fans,” he said.

“The amount of stick I took from my mates over derby defeats was horrendous and I used to dish it out as well, so I want to me giving the stick.”
