In what was an iconic night in Aston Villa’s history, Unai Emery’s side were crowned as Europa League champions at Besiktas Park as they cruised their way to a routine 3-0 victory against Freiburg.

Securing a first piece of European silverware in 44 years, Villa essentially got the job done in the space of seven minutes prior to the first-half as both Youri Tielemans and Emirates Buendia produced a pair of sensational strikes.

Largely in complete control and not really having to get out of third gear in Istanbul, Emery’s side added a third just before the hour mark as England international Morgan Rogers tapped home at the near post.

Embarking on what has been a real fairytale since Emery arrived at Villa Park back in November 2022, Wednesday’s iconic night in Turkey is also the first trophy that the Midlands-based outfit have secured in three decades.

On a night when Aston Villa were crowned as Europa League champions, we have taken a look at the main talking points from Wednesday’s showpiece event.

An iconic night for Villa

Producing a dominant second-leg comeback against bitter local rivals Nottingham Forest on May 7th as they eventually breezed their way to a 4-1 aggregate victory, Aston Villa travelled to Turkey almost universally regarded as a standout contender to get their hands on a first piece of silverware in 30 years.

While Emery’s side might have found themselves at the heart of a worrying three-match losing run on either side of opening May, the Premier League outfit have come roaring back in a famous fashion.

Picking up some perfect momentum over the weekend as they claimed a thrilling 4-2 victory at home against now-former Premier League champions Liverpool, Villa have also found quite the clinical edge in the final third and they were once again at their free-flowing best here.

Storming past Freiburg and now bagging 13 goals in just their previous four appearances across all competitions over the past fortnight, it is hard to understate the job that Emery has done since arriving at Villa Park back in November 2022.

Coming through the doors as Steven Gerrard’s replacement, Wednesday’s iconic night for Villa is also the fifth individual Europa League crown that the Spanish tactician has got his hands on.

Rogers and co steal the show

While Ollie Watkins might have opened Thursday’s iconic showdown in the midst of an astonishing free-scoring purple patch, it was another England international who largely stole all of the headlines on Wednesday night.

Getting an assist for Tielemans’ sensational opener and also wrapping things up just before the hour mark as he cleverly tapped home at the near post, Morgan Rogers was at the heart of everything positive that Villa produced here.

Putting Freiburg to the sword and producing a Man of the Match performance on foreign soil, the former Middlesbrough starlet finds his stock at a red-hot high and it is no surprise Rogers is attracting a string of heavyweight European interest.

With it suggested that the likes of reigning Champions League winners PSG are keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old, Rogers is also set to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad and jet off to North America next month.

Registering eight direct goal contributions while in Europa League action during this season’s tournament (three goals, five assists), Villa’s playmaking talisman has also written himself into Midlands folklore.

A nightmare night for Freiburg under the bright lights

While Freiburg might have mounted their own respective second-leg comeback against Portuguese outfit Braga earlier in the month as they eventually punched their ticket to Turkey thanks to a thrilling 4-3 aggregate win, Julian Schuster’s side were more than aware that they faced a monumental challenge here.

Despite picking their own dream momentum over the weekend as they secured a shock 4-1 romp at home against RB Leipzig, they drastically failed to find a similar level on Wednesday night.

With their Europa League dreams take a critical blow in the space of seven minutes just before the half-time break, Freiburg will certainly be frustrated by a lacklustre performance on the bright lights in Turkey.

Completely blown away on their historic night and signing off the 2025/26 campaign with a real whimper, the German outfit have also shown some rather glaring defensive struggles.

Including a 4-0 drumming at the hands of Borussia Dortmund on April 26th, Freiburg have now failed to register a single clean sheet from any of their previous 10 consecutive appearances across all competitions.
