Frimpong eye fears played down

Wolves have calmed initial fears that Emmanuel Frimpong could be out for three months after going off injured in the 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa.

A report suggested that the on-loan Arsenal midfielder could be out for a lengthy period after an accidental collision with Villa’s Stiliyan Petrov saw him stretchered off with an eye injury as he tried to head home a corner.

But the player Tweeted after full-time, telling his followers: “You lot should stop caring about me I hope petrov foot is on after hitting A metal face:)”

He then commented in an official capacity: “I can’t remember too much about it to be honest.”

“I remember heading the ball and from what I heard I then got a kick in the face.”

“We’ll just have to give it a couple of days and wait for it to settle down.”

A statement released by the club added: “Emmanuel Frimpong will undergo further assessment on the eye injury which saw him stretchered off against Aston Villa this afternoon.”

“The on-loan midfielder went straight to hospital for initial assessment on the injury where an initial examination revealed no head or spinal problems.”

“However, the 20-year-old has a severe swelling around his eye and will need further examination to discover the extent of the problem.”

“Frimpong was able to return to Molineux after the game following the trip to hospital.”

Manager Mick McCarthy told reporters little mistakes snowballed for Wolves.

“We should have been more in front at half-time, we played well,” he said.

“We just managed to find another way to concede a goal haven’t we? From us being in good possession and having a throw-in and it ends up with five or six little things we could have done better and it ends up in our net.”

“Not much more could have gone wrong: one sent off, one carried off, penalty and sod’s law Robbie (Keane) put one in the corner.”

“I think there’s a few turning points in the game: the chances we had at 2-1 where I think we should have scored, the second goal, he’s hit it well Robbie (but) I think we should have done better from the throw-in to the clearance to not getting the bits in the middle of the pitch to the clearance.

“Not a glaring error from anyone but little ones which end up costing the team a goal but then the sending off changed it I don’t think we lose with 11 men on the pitch.”
