Liverpool have confirmed Steven Gerrard will be sidelined for at least a fortnight because of an ankle infection.

The news rules the Reds captain out of England’s two friendlies against Spain and Sweden later this month.

While not setting a date for the midfielder’s return, the Anfield club have confirmed Gerrard will miss their home tie against Swansea City on Saturday.

A Liverpool statement read: “Steven Gerrard has now undergone treatment to clear out all infection from his right ankle, which has been placed in a protective plaster cast.”

“The player will not be available for this weekend’s game against Swansea City or for the upcoming England friendlies against Spain and Sweden.”

“Steven will now continue his rehabilitation programme under the guidance of the Club’s medical staff.”

Gerrard sustained the infection following a knock in training prior to Liverpool’s Premier League match against West Brom over the weekend.

He has not featured for Kenny Dalglish’s side since they drew with Manchester United in October.

Gerrard had only recently returned from a groin injury and has not featured in Fabio Capello’s England squad since November 2010.
