The World Cup quarter-final between Ghana and Uruguay went into a penalty shootout after both teams were locked at 1-1 following extra time at Soccer City on Friday.

Asamoah Gyan missed a penalty in the last minute of extra-time which would have won the match for Ghana.

Ghana scored first through midfielder Sulley Muntari with a 30-yard drive in first-half stoppage time, before Diego Forlan equalised with a long-range free-kick in the 55th minute.

The eventual winner will play the Netherlands in the semi-finals in Cape Town on Tuesday.
