Bordeaux coach Francis Gillot has spoken of his relief after his side won the Coup de France, their first major honour in four years.

A late goal from Cheick Diabate sealed a 3-2 win for Bordeaux over Evian, after the Malian had earlier opened the scoring and missed a penalty for his side.

It was Bordeaux’s first Coup de France win since 1987, and their first major trophy since taking out the Ligue 1 title in 2008/09.

Gillot was delighted to lift his first piece of silverware with the club.

“It’s a great relief. We beat a good Evian side,” Gillot told France 2.

“The failure to make the break with the penalty, it made us doubt.

“When you finish like that, it warms my heart. It was a beautiful show with five goals – I’m happy.

“I think we proved that we could play ball.”

Evian coach Pascal Dupraz paid tribute to the victors.

“Hats off to Bordeaux, they deserve their victory. We were too naive,” he said.
