Gomez slams Cologne tactics

Bayern Munich target man Mario Gomez has slammed Cologne’s defensive tactics despite a 3-0 win in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Even after the Bavarian giants went down to 10 men when Franck Ribery was sent off for a second bookable offence, the visitors persisted with their deep defensive tactics.

Gomez was first on the scoresheet on 47 minutes, before David Alaba and Toni Kroos added the insurance but the German international said it was a ‘shame’ to see a side come to Munich with such a lack of ambition.

“I have played many matches for Bayern Munich and we have played a few teams who have played very defensively. But I have never seen something like this. It is a shame for the game of football,” Gomez said.

“Of course every team coming to Munich wants to find a way to grab points, but this I have never seen. Especially when you’re one goal behind and you have one player more on the pitch.”

Bayern played with 10 men for nearly an hour after Ribery saw red for grabbing defender Henrique Soreno by the throat.

But the league leaders had little trouble compensating for his loss and with the win opened up a handy buffer at the top of the table going into the mid-season break.

Bayern have 37 points from their 17 games and will take at least a three-point lead into their next game on January 20, pending other results.
