Guti: Messi should win Ballon d´Or

Former Spain international Guti feels Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi deserves to win the Fifa Ballon d’Or for his fine performances this term.

And Guti, who made his name at Real Madrid, wishes the diminutive magician played for his former club.

Messi has already netted 15 goals in 13 official appearances for Barca this season after breaking numerous records in the first half of the year, and Guti believes it would be right to reward him with the prestigious individual award.

“I would give the Ballon d’Or to Messi. The only problem is that he plays for Barcelona. I would like to see him at Real Madrid,” Guti told Punto Pelota.

Guti believes Cristiano Ronaldo needs more support from Real Madrid fans.

“Cristiano is fundamental for Madrid. He needs to be given a lot of love. He has been in incredible form and that’ll make him happy. He’s a very special player and is a key figure at Madrid,” he said.

And Guti went on to criticise Jose Mourinho for his reluctance to use players who come through the ranks of the club’s youth academy.

“I really admire Mourinho, but playing (Michael) Essien at left-back (rather than a youth player) sends the wrong message to the club’s youngsters,” he said.

Real were beaten 2-1 by Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, and they will be desperate to return to winning ways against Mallorca on Sunday.
