Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes hailed his team’s ‘perfect’ performance after they demolished Basel 7-0 in the Champions League.

With victory needed to ensure their spot in the last eight of Europe’s premier club competition, Bayern turned on the style at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, with Mario Gomez scoring four and Arjen bagging a double on the way to an emphatic victory.

After beating Hoffenheim 7-1 in the Bundesliga at the weekend, Bayern have now scored 14 goals in their last two matches, and Heynckes could not fault any part of their performance.

“We had already played well last Saturday and I noticed this week how much the team wanted to go through to the next round,” Heynckes said.

“Today, we have put in a top class performance from the first until the last minute. Overall, it was a perfect game from us.”

Gomez’s haul of four goals lifted his season tally to 35 in all competitions, and Heynckes wsa pleased to see his striker in top form.

“I’m very happy for him because I have seen games where he has been substituted and the crowd have jeered him,” Heynckes said.

“The fact that he scores goals is a reflection that the team is playing well.”

“A striker needs security and confidence and he gets that from the team.”

Basel looked set to cause another upset after knocking Manchester United out of the group stage, but they were thoroughly outplayed on Tuesday, leaving little for coach Heiko Vogel to take from the match.

“You have to see this is a game to try to take something positive away,” Vogel said.

“Maybe we can learn more from this than the wins we’ve enjoyed so far in the competition.”

“Of course you have to talk about the quality Bayern have, but we need to learn our lessons.”

“Bayern had an outstanding game. They played sensationally, this was their best game of the season so far.

“With such a performance, the final is possible, but Barcelona are still in the tournament.”
