Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson was pleased with the performance of his young side after they secured a hard-fought point in the Europa League.

Hodgson’s side drew 1-1 away to Steaua Bucharest on Thursday to seal their progression into the Round of 32 of the competition.

The former Fulham manager rang the changes prior to kick-off with the likes of youngsters Martin Kelly, Jonjo Shelvey and Dani Pacheco all starting in place of the rested Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles.

Hodgson also used the match as an opportunity to test the likes of fringe players Milan Jovanovic and Ryan Babel, both of whom combined to open the visitors’ account before an Eder Bonfirm header levelled the scores.

Hodgson was pleased with his side’s performance as they gained the point required to qualify with one group match remaining.

“I was most interested in the performance and if the players could stand up to the challenge,” he said.

“I think they did and it is going to be a pleasant ride home for us.”

The Reds manager sympathised with goalkeeper Pepe Reina, whose error allowed the hosts back into the game.

“Pepe is a bit down,” Hodgson said.

“He had an exceptionally good game in goal but he’s a bit disappointed that he didn’t keep a clean sheet.”
