Hughes eyes turn in fortunes

Mark Hughes is hoping the new year brings a change in fortune for Stoke City.

The Britannia Stadium club head into 2014 on the back of heavy away defeats against Newcastle United and Tottenham.

Stoke were beaten 5-1 at St James’ Park after having Glenn Whelan and Marc Wilson sent off when 1-0 ahead, and also believed they should have had a penalty before Tottenham scored three goals without reply on Sunday.

With Asmir Begovic, Andy Wilkinson and Stephen Ireland also suffering injuries or illness in recent days, manager Hughes has had much to contend with.

However, Wilson, Whelan and Ireland are all available for Wednesday’s visit of fourth-placed Everton, and Hughes is determined to remain upbeat.

“We have had a couple of difficult games over the festive period and we have another one coming up in the form of Everton,” said the Welshman on Monday.

“We are at home so we will go out there and put in a performance to win the game.

“We have had a few decisions go against us recently, so we are hoping our luck will change.

“We also have a very good home record so we will be looking to continue that on Wednesday.

“Andy Wilkinson is unfortunately injured and is a doubt for the Everton match, but everyone else apart from Begovic (broken finger) and (Robert) Huth (knee) is fit.

“Wilko picked up a heel injury in the game at White Hart Lane and is struggling. (But) we have players who have served their suspensions (Whelan and Wilson), so we have more options to choose from.”

Stoke sit 12th in the Premier League, five points above the relegation zone, but have lost only one league game at home this season.
