Veteran Brazil goalkeeper Fernando Prass has been ruled out of the Rio Olympics after suffering a fractured elbow.
The 38-year-old, who was a surprise inclusion in the squad, was injured in the warm-up for Saturday’s match against Japan.
Scans revealed the extent of the injury and the Palmeiras goalkeeper expressed his sorrow on Twitter.
“I have endeavoured to realise the dream of being a Brazilian national team player. But, unfortunately, it is not to be,” he wrote.
“The examination carried out today showed a fractured elbow and I cannot compete in the Olympics.
“I’ll take care of myself and come back even stronger to lead Palmeiras and, who knows, maybe make the [Brazil] squad again.”
The hosts face Denmark, Iraq and South Africa in Group A.
