International friendly wrap: Mexico outclass Wales

Wales manager Chris Coleman suffered defeat in his first game in charge as his team fell to a 2-0 loss to Mexico on Sunday.

Aldo de Nigris struck late in each half to earn his side a deserved win, as the Welsh laboured in the New Jersey heat against the impressive hosts.

Mexico started brightly and Wales goalkeeper Jason Brown was called into action early on by Giovani dos Santos, who forced the 30-year-old into a low save after shooting from a tight angle.

Minutes later, debutant Severo Meza rose unmarked just six yards from goal, but a last-ditch block from Chris Gunter saw the ball deflected over the bar.

Wales had little possession and failed to threaten on rare counter-attacking opportunities.

But just as it looked like they would see out the first half with a clean sheet, they conceded on 43 minutes.

Meza was played in down the right flank, crossing to the back post where De Nigris rose unmarked to head past Brown.

Mexico continued their dominance after the break, with Brown denying Meza and Dos Santos.

Craig Bellamy looked the most dangerous Wales attacker and saw his long-range free-kick deflected over the bar before he set up Sam Ricketts, who failed to connect with the Liverpool forward’s cross.

Jose Manuel de la Torre’s men finally got their sealer in the 89th minute, as Edgar Andrade crossed for De Nigris to head home from the centre of the penalty area.

In other matches, Oman and Lebanon played out a 1-1 draw and Albania edged Iran 1-0.
